Report on the lecture entitled “Why patients should not be in pain”

 

An online education entitled “Why patients should not be in pain” has been organized by the Association of Medical Students in Bosnia and Herzegovina – BoHeMSA and within the framework of the ”SEW It Up” project. A lecturer was Dr. Jasmina Smajić, coordinator of the Erasmus+ project Strengthening Capacities for Higher Education of Pain Medicine in Western Balkan countries (HEPMP) The purpose of the lecture was to introduce participants with the definition of pain, methods of pain assessment, classification of pain, the purpose of pain treatment, as well as the significance of the lecture on pain. A pain is a subjective phenomenon that includes sensory and emotional dimensions, and the patient’s testimony about the experience of pain is very important for its assessment and adequate elimination. Pain is one of the most common symptoms in medical practice. It was pointed out at the importance of pain assessment, because it can be considered as the fifth vital sign, and during lecture were introduced methods that can be used in the daily practice of assessing the intensity of pain. The verbal rating scale for pain and the visual analog scale are depicted from the one-dimensional scale, and from the multidimensional Mc-GILL questionnaire. Pain classification according to duration, pathophysiological changes and etiology have been presented at the lecture. Methods as the importance of adequate pain treatment are also explained and presented at the lecture. Special emphasis is placed on the introduction of opioids into analgesia, as well as on the causes of opioid phobia. At the end of the lecture, the importance of holding lectures that deal with pain was presented, as well as goals, tasks and activities implemented within the Erasmus + project Strengthening Capacities for Higher Education of Pain Medicine in Western Balkan Countries – HEPMP. The dissemination activity of the project WP 5 (Project dissemination) – 5.3.Promotion of HEPMP program events have been completed with this lecture.
