This year’s 25th Summer University in Tuzla was officially opened on 1 June 2020 by a lecture entitled ”What waves in the Gravity?” held by Dr. Vedad Pašić, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics at the University of Tuzla. The host of the lecture was Dr. Vesna Bratovčić, Vice-Rector for International Relations at the University of Tuzla, who thanked to everyone who accessed the lecture via Zoom app.
The participants of the lectures learnt a lot about gravitational waves, which are one of the most interesting achievements in science in recent years. Professor Pašić easily gave an overview of the development of theories of gravity and science in this field, as well as a mathematical basis for it. The discovery of gravitational waves was announced to the world at a press conference on 11 February 2016 by scientists (CalTech, MIT, NSF, Virgo, GEO, UK STFC and Max Planck Institute for Graviational Physics Hannover). In October 2017 the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize to Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorn for “key contributions to the LIGO detector and observation of gravitational waves”.
Professor Pašić also shared an important information that at the University of Tuzla there is a team of experts consisted by professors and assistants dealing with general relativity, gravitational waves, black holes, quantization of gravity, alternative theories, etc. and who have continuous international cooperation with many universities and institutions dealing with these issues. University of Tuzla was a host from 7 to 10 October 2019 of a CANTATA meeting entitled Cosmology and Astrophysics Network for Theoretical Advances and Training Actions which was attended by scientists and professors from entire Europe.
The lecture ended with an interactive discussion on the above mentioned topics. For a significant number of “non-mathematicians” in the audience, insights into the way of understanding the Universe, which were influenced by the above theories and their application in everyday life, were interesting, and we are usually not even aware of that. It emphasizes the importance of informing and directing young people to fundamental science and the importance of interdisciplinary communication in terms of finding ways to apply scientific theories for the well-being of mankind and the socio-economic development of each society.
