The Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Tuzla officially opened the Center for the Development of Students’ Scientific Potential – “Girls in Science” on Friday, October 31, 2025. This is the first center of its kind at the University, dedicated to promoting and strengthening the role of women in science and research.
The Center has been established within the framework of the Erasmus+ project GEAR – Gender Equality in Academia and Research, which aims to advance gender equality within the academic community. The project is funded by the European Union, with the University of Tuzla serving as one of the partner institutions from the Western Balkans.
The primary objective of the Center is to connect academia, industry, and research, while empowering female students to develop their ideas, skills, and competencies during their studies. In doing so, the Center seeks to better prepare them for the labor market or for future academic careers. Moreover, the Center will serve as a collaborative space for female professors, teaching assistants, and accomplished women from industry who will share their knowledge and experiences with young researchers through lectures, workshops, and mentoring activities — fostering a strong community of cooperation and support.
At the opening ceremony, welcome addresses were delivered by Dr. Nermin Sarajlić, Full Professor and Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Tuzla; Dr. Mensur Kasumović, Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering; and Dr. Alma Šećerbegović, Associate Professor, Head of the “Girls in Science” Center, and Coordinator of the Erasmus+ GEAR Project.
The event was attended by representatives of the University of Tuzla, faculty members, female students, as well as members of the GirlTHing Association of Young Women, a partner organization in the project.
As part of the event, and with the support of the University’s Office for Research and Development (NIR), the Center hosted its first workshop titled “Introduction to Scientific Research.” The workshop was led by Dr. Jasmina Okičić Džindo, Full Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tuzla, and focused on developing research skills among female students and promoting scientific research through a practical, hands-on approach.
