Symposium on the Decarbonization of District Heating Systems Held in Tuzla

Univerzitet u Tuzli - Održan simpozijum “Dekarbonizacija sistema daljinskog grijanja”

The symposium “Decarbonization of District Heating Systems”, organized by the University of Tuzla, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and the Aarhus Center in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was held on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of the University of Tuzla.

The event was organized as part of the REHEATEAST project – “Building Local Partnerships to Reduce Fossil Energy Demand in District Heating Systems in the Danube East Region”, supported by the Interreg Danube Region Programme and co-financed by the European Union.

The symposium brought together experts, representatives of institutions, members of the academic community, and industry professionals, with the aim of exchanging experiences and presenting innovative solutions for reducing the use of fossil fuels in district heating systems.

Particular attention was given to the city of Tuzla, which still largely depends on fossil fuel combustion for heat production. Within the framework of the symposium, a feasibility study for the University of Tuzla Campus was presented, focusing on reducing the supply of thermal energy from the Tuzla Thermal Power Plant.

Participants highlighted that the decarbonization of district heating systems represents a key step toward fulfilling the obligations Bosnia and Herzegovina undertook by signing the Sofia Declaration on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, as well as toward achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
